Tips on Writing Letters
to the Editor and to
Legislators
The Letters-To-The-Editor section is one of the most
read sections of the newspaper. It is very important to the success of the
pro-life movement that people regularly write letters on a variety of topics
concerning the life issues. Everyone can participate. It is inexpensive and not
time consuming. Legislators also pay close attention to letters. They know that
each letter represents 100 other voters who did not take time to write. Through
letters, we can educate the public about abortion and euthanasia. You can
write an effective letter using these steps:
- Write in your "natural voice," that is,
say things in your own natural way. Type letters to the editor;
handwritten letters can be sent to legislators.
- Be direct and to the point. Keep your letter to
one page in length. Make your point in the first paragraph.
- Be positive. Concentrate on the positive things
that will result from your position. Never threaten.
- Take a moment to reflect on your life experiences
and refer to them in your letter. Make it personal. Add any special
expertise you may have on the specific subject.
- Use statistics to support your position (Example:
"A January 2000 Wirthlin Worldwide poll found that 72% of Vermonters
support Parental Notification requirements"). Call VRLC for
statistics.
- Read your letter out loud to see how it sounds.
