Another Year, Another Scandal ~
Planned Parenthood of Northern New England and Vermont
– Following decades of scandals that reveal Planned Parenthood of Vermont’s cavalier attitude toward teen sex, teen sexual abuse, teen promiscuity and abortion as a method of “family planning”, the taxpayer-funded organization is now coming under renewed scrutiny nationwide for involvement in the pre-ordering of body parts from living unborn babies.
Unlike most states, Planned Parenthood of Vermont (PPofVT) does not have to bid for federal Title X Family Planning money. For decades, the Vermont Department of Health has allotted the state’s entire Title X annual grant to them, except for a few years when Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE) rejected the funding due to restrictions on their promotion of abortion. In addition, PPofVT receives hundreds of thousands of dollars from state revenues paid by Vermont taxpayers.
Decades of Planned Parenthood scandals include:
- Not long after New Hampshire enacted an effective parental involvement law, Planned Parenthood of Northern New England moved their Lebanon, New Hampshire abortion clinic to White River Junction in 2014. Planned Parenthood strenuously opposes laws that require parental involvement before an abortion can be performed on a pregnant minor. By re-locating their clinic just across the border in Vermont, they can abort the babies of young New Hampshire girls without having to notify a parent 48 hours in advance.
- Planned Parenthood of Vermont was fined $30,000 for violating campaign finance laws in 2010. PPNNE Action Fund illegally raised and spent $120,000 to influence the outcome of the gubernatorial race between Brian Dubie and Peter Shumlin. The funds were used to air misleading television ads against Dubie in the final weeks of the campaign. Ultimately, Dubie lost by a mere 4,000 votes. Planned Parenthood of Northern New England vice president of education Jill Krowinski, who signed off on these activities which violated the law, was subsequently appointed by Governor Peter Shumlin to fill an open seat in the Vermont House. Krowinski continued to earn a salary from Planned Parenthood while serving as a State Representative for a period of time. She has held the office of Speaker of the House since 2021.
- PPNNE sponsors on their website “A Naked Notion” hosted by Laci Green. These sexually-explicit “frank, open conversations about sexuality” are available to viewers of all ages. The BDSM video went viral. https://www.plannedparenthood.org/planned-parenthood-northern-new-england/a-naked-notion
- PPNNE launched a program called “Have Consensual Text” where people of any age could sign up to receive “weekly text messages that include sex facts, quizzes, and chances to win stuff.” The program appears to have been discontinued. This is a sample subject of what the program involved: “My boyfriend and I have been having a really fun time sexually. We were laughing about the idea of having sex on the table the night before Thanksgiving. Any advice?”
- The Man Phone web site was created by Planned Parenthood in 2001 with a grant from the VT Department of Health. It was supposed to be health information for sexually active men between the ages of 25 and 35. The Man Phone was shut down by the VDH in 2005 after it was found to be linked to pornography and that PPNNE’s web site was geared for teens. (See Seven Days article about the Man Phone: https://www.sevendaysvt.com/news/condom-nation-2129139)
- Planned Parenthood of Northern New England has sponsored training for Health Educators – primarily classroom teachers in primary and secondary education. One program that PPNNE hosted at Vermont hotels was entitled “Sexual Attitude Reassessment” or SAR. Planned Parenthood’s description of the seminars included the use of “emotionally evocative and sexually explicit films and presentations to explore attitudes and values.”
- Consumer Reports flunked two brands of condoms manufactured by Planned Parenthood in 2005.
- 2001 testimony in the Vermont State House revealed that Planned Parenthood had no record of making any report of sexual abuse as required under Title 18, despite their claims that many of the teens on whom they perform abortions without parental knowledge are victims of abuse.
- Planned Parenthood failed to submit any reports to the Vermont Department of Health of the chemical abortions they provided in 1994. Vermont law requires that a “Report of Induced Termination of Pregnancy” be filed for each incidence to the Vermont Department of Health for the purposes of compiling Vital Statistics (Vermont Statutes Title 18. Health, Section 5222. Reports). The law at the time provided for a fine of “up to $500” for each failure to report. No fine was imposed in this case. The provision for a fine has been removed from the statute.
- In 1989. Planned Parenthood organized “The Safety Dance” geared for junior high and high school students. Once the details of the explicit nature of the games and music became public, “The Safety Dance” was cancelled.
